AC/DC 1973 concert debut at Chequers, Sydney

AC/DC - Chequers, Sydney Australia - on this day, December 31st 1973, AC/DC take to the stage in what is cited as being AC/DC's earliest gig. The small nightclub venue was host to the first - and fast changing line-up - with Malcolm Young ruthlessly firing and hiring rhythm sections throughout their first nine months.

The gig took place soon after the band's formation by Malcolm Young, and just after the band was named. The brothers' sister, Margaret, was initially thought to have given the band their name, however, this was thrown into doubt in 2008 when Angus Young revealed in an interview that it was George Young's wife, Sandra, who had suggested the name.

The lineup - dressed in jeans and t-shirts - comprised Dave Evans on lead vocals, Malcolm Young on lead/rhythm guitar, Angus Young on lead/rhythm guitar, Larry Van Kriedt and Colin Burgess (the first member of AC/DC to receive his marching orders) on drums. At the time, Angus and Malcolm's roles were somewhat interchangeable as they had not settled on their roles at that time.

The set included various covers - Chuck Berry, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles - as well as the odd Malcolm original.
