Facebook hits 500 million users - Are YOU on it?

It wasn't very long ago that they were touting their 400 millionth user, now they are up to 500m.

Who is on it? What is all the fuss about and do we NEED to have an account? I have a developer account for Facebook apps and API, BUT it seems too vast and daunting to use for personal use. Everyone seems to be on it though - inspite of a lot of bad rep, so it must be good for something. Seems to be taking lots of people away from the TV so that can't be a bad thing...
